ABOUT DR. K

"I can tell by the way you talk: you've been to school. You've got some brains. Why would you choose a fighter's life if you don't have to?"
-Rocky Balboa in "Creed."

Kelly "Dr. K" Flanagan has a doctorate in sports management, a bachelor's in journalism and spent six years as a college professor after serving as sports editor of three newspapers in Texas. Why would he choose a comedian's life if he doesn't have to?

"Because I do have to," Dr. K said. "I fought this passion for years before I finally gave in."

Before getting enough degrees to qualify as a thermometer and testing the waters in a variety of occupations, the Wizard of One-Liners practiced stand up for four years in the 1980s in Oklahoma City. He was a regular at open mics in Oklahoma City and Tulsa and starred in three 30-minute cable TV specials in Norman, Okla.

"I finished second to a dog act 26 years before Tom Cotter did," he said. "Then I was inactive for a long time when I was a POW, Prisoner of Wife."

After returning to the stage, he opened for longtime Comedy Store host Argus Hamilton twice in Oklahoma City. He was also a regular joke contributor to "Rise and Shine," and morning TV news show in Oklahoma City.

Frustrated with the small-market entertainment field, Dr. K moved to Hillside, NJ so he could "get into the New York comedy scene without paying New York rent." He returned to Oklahoma in July of 2024 for family matters and is ready to show off what he has learned to the hometown fans.

"I gave up everything for comedy, including my car," he said. "Well, I totalled my car while delivering for UberEats in East Orange (NJ)."

During his stay on the East Coast, the Prince of Pun and Parody shares his wit with the fans of the Comedy Diner in Newark and many clubs in the Big Apple, including The Gotham Comedy Club, Broadway Comedy Club, the Comic Strip, St. Mark's Comedy Club, Rodney's Comedy Club (formerly Dangerfield's), Caroline's on Broadway, the New York Comedy Club, The Tiny Cupboard in Brooklyn and the Greenwich Village Comedy Club.

Dr. K's routine is mostly about his views of Oklahoma, marriage, ADHD and anything else that comes to mind.

DR. K HEADLINES LOCAL TALENT NIGHT AT BRICKTOWN

OKLAHOMA CITY -Comedian Kelly "Dr. K" Flanagan will be the closer on Local Talent Night at the Bricktown Comedy Club.
"If you show up late, you can still see me perform," the 20-year veteran of comedy said.
Admission is free and there is no food or drink minimum for this event, but the Wizard of One-Liners highly recommends the cheeseburger quesadillas and strawberry cheesecake. There will be half-price drinks available after the show, which usually ends around 8:40 p.m.
The Prince of Pun and Parody has been sharing his musings with the public for 40 years (not in a row) with performances at hundreds of comedy clubs, karaoke bars and other venues, including half-hour specials on Norman cable TV and dozens of posts on Channel 43's Rise and Shine Morning Show.
He recently shared his humor on the Sports Animal radio station and with the family of Oklahoma Sooner women's basketball star Raegan Beers.
